Vic: Bracks doesn t want to wait for NSW injecting room results

Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS says he won't be willing to wait and see how a supervised
heroin injecting room works in Sydney before moving to establish similar facilities in
Melbourne.

MR BRACKS has told reporters that almost 100 people have died from heroin overdoses
already this year and he's not willing to stand by and watch more people die.

National Party Leader PETER RYAN has said it may be appropriate for Victoria to delay
moving further on trialling injecting facilities in Melbourne.

The National Party and the Liberal Party in Victoria have not adopted a formal opposition
to the facilities, but have expressed grave concerns about them and seem unlikely to support
them.

MR BRACKS said yesterday he would consider a compromise on the issue, after parliamentary
support for the injecting facilities appeared to crumble.
