Terror trial opens for 8 alleged Greek anarchists

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Eight Greeks accused of belonging to a domestic radical anarchist group have gone on trial on terrorism charges in a maximum security Athens prison.

They have been charged with membership in the Revolutionary Struggle group, best known for firing a rocket-propelled grenade into the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2007. That attack caused minor damage and no injuries.

Three of the suspects who have admitted to group membership defended Revolutionary Struggle's actions Monday, and said their trial was politically motivated. The other five denied all charges.

The trial will resume Nov. 1.

Nobody died in Revolutionary Struggle's attacks. The group appeared in 2003 and has claimed responsibility for bombing the Athens Stock Exchange and a gun attack that severely wounded a riot policeman in 2009.
