NSW: Heroin injecting room trial update
Australia's first heroin injecting room was officially opened in Sydney's red-lightdistrict on May 1 last year.
The 18-month trial was to end in October this year but will be extended for another 12 months.
According to figures released by the NSW government:
- 30,000 visits have been made to the centre.
- More than 2,600 people have registered to shoot up in the clinic.
- More than 200 users have overdosed in the centre.
- Of those who overdosed, more than 70 per cent, or 157, were heroin users.
- More than 400 users were referred to drug treatment or counselling services
- Overdose deaths and ambulance call-outs to non-fatal overdoses in the Kings Crossand nearby Darlinghurst areas have fallen during the period of the trial
