Nokia 3Q profit falls 30 percent, revenue slips

Nokia Corp., the world's largest cell phone maker, lost market share in the third quarter as profits dropped 30 percent because of falling sales and lower prices on the handsets that did sell.

Even so, Nokia said Thursday it expects increasing sales for the rest of the year, and it stuck to its 10 percent growth estimate for the whole industry in 2008.

Net profit in July through September plummeted to 1.09 billion euros ($2.7 billion), from 1.56 billion euros a year earlier. Net sales dropped 5 percent to 12.2 billion euros ($16.6 billion), from 12.9 billion euros.

Bomb in Afghan Capital Kills at Least 35

KABUL, Afghanistan - An enormous bomb ripped through a police academy bus at Kabul's busiest transportation hub Sunday, killing at least 35 people in the deadliest insurgent attack in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

The thunderous explosion in Kabul, which sheared the metal sidings and roof off the bus, leaving only a charred skeleton, represented a leap in scale from previous Taliban or al-Qaida bombings here, raising the specter of an increase in Iraq-style attacks in Afghanistan.

In the country's south, a roadside explosion killed three soldiers from the U.S.-led coalition and their Afghan interpreter. The brief …

Talk to wife before your marriage is truly hopeless

Dear Carolyn: I am in my 30s, married five years, and have beenwith my wife for almost 10. We have no kids. I am thinking ofdivorce. My wife and I used to get along; she was so great - but inthe last three years she has completely changed. Lately it seemsthat she only cares about her career and money. We are not poor byany means. In addition, her temper has worsened and I get beratedfor any slip-up I make. For instance, I was two minutes late leavingfor work this morning, and I got yelled at for 10 minutes in the car(she blamed me for making her late). She even yells at me when shemakes mistakes. The yelling and put-downs have happened so often inthe last three years (daily) …

Society's answer to 9/11 terrorism

The fraction of Americans who wanted to deal with Sept. 11 as acriminal matter, to pursue al-Qaida plotters not militarily, butthrough law, will have a taste of how slow and uncertain that processwould have been when Zacarias Moussaoui, the French citizenconsidered the "20th hijacker'' by the FBI, goes on trial in U.S.District Court in Virginia this fall.

Moussaoui attended flying school with the Sept. 11 terrorists, andauthorities say, would have been the fifth man on the plane thatcrashed into a field in Pennsylvania had not a suspicious flightinstructor reported him. Being in jail at the time of the attacks, hecould not be accused of directly carrying out the crime. So …

Easing the transition to menopause with vitamin E and soy

The average American woman lives a third of her life after menopause, which usually begins at about age 50. However, it's not uncommon for pre-menopausal symptoms to start, with increasing frequency, about seven to 10 years before this stage (called the perimenopausal period). In fact, in the U.S. today, there are more than 35 million women who are transitioning to menopause.

Menopause is triggered as the ovaries, over time, produce less and less estrogen - and without estrogen to stimulate ovulation, the menstrual periods cease. Although many women are relieved to see an end to the monthly cycle of bloating, irritability, and other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, the natural …

The profession awaits the conclusion of the merger project with CMAs following the decision by l'Ordre des comptables agres du Qubec and its CMA and CGA counterparts to put an end to their proposed merger plan (news is expected about December 15).

In the meantime, management and staff are scratching their heads over annual performance evaluations. These reviews are more often sources of anxiety and problems other than better productivity. The reason, according to industry expert Jocelyn Brard, is many of these reviews are not aligned with business strategies. In "Stop the anxiety" (p. 26), Brard …

There goes the sun World scrambles to watch

The last total solar eclipse of the millennium swept from the tipof England's Cornwall to the far reaches of the Indian subcontinenttoday.

Thousands crammed the streets of Ramnicu Valcea, the south-centralcity in Romania where the spectacle could be seen the longest - 2minutes and 23 seconds.

In Rome, Pope John Paul II cut short his weekly audience withpilgrims, saying, "I know that some of you are in a hurry to see theeclipse of the sun."

In Sarajevo, streets were deserted in a scene reminiscent of theworst days of the Bosnian war. With special viewing glassesunavailable, most people stayed indoors.

In the Middle East, Muslims shuttered themselves inside on theorders of clerics. Others flocked to mosques as earthquakes and anout-of-season hailstorm intensified eclipse unease.

The Eiffel Tower was packed with thousands of people on its baseand hundreds more on the monument itself. As Paris reached itsdarkest stage, street lights came on and the tower was lit.

In Cornwall, at the southwest tip of England and the eclipse'slandfall, heavy clouds made the two-minute spectacle invisible tohundreds of thousands who had come to watch.

Darkness fell on London, where the eclipse was 96.5 percent oftotality. Trials were adjourned briefly at the Old Bailey criminalcourt to allow jurors and lawyers - but not defendants - to go out towatch.

Leave maw broon alone

It Is absurd that health experts are singling out the Maw Brooncookbook for criticism.

Surely these people have better things to do with their time thanlambasting something which has brought a smile to the face of so manypeople.

Apart from anything else, I would suggest this book is keepingalive many traditional recipes that are in danger of being lost inthis modern world of convenience food and ready meals.

Of course some of the book's recipes are high in fat and sugar. That is a reflection of the food that was the staple of a previousgeneration.

If someone was going to plan all their meals using this bookexclusively, then yes, there might be a risk of ill-health.

But people are no more going to do that than they are going to eatnothing but fast food burgers all their lives.

For an occasional treat and a bit of a laugh, there is nothingwrong with Maw Broon's recipes.

Experts who carp on about such a trivial issue run the risk of allof their pronouncements being dismissed out of hand as more PCnonsense.

Golf Capsules

SHANGHAI (AP) — U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won $2 million in the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, beating Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

McIlroy holed a 2-foot putt for the victory after Kim missed a 3-footer.

The $2 million first prize is the richest in golf. The top players, staying in Shanghai another week for the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions at Sheshan International, also received appearance money and last place paid $25,000. Because the event isn't sanctioned by a major tour, there were no ranking points at stake.

Kim earned $750,000.

Car Bomb Kills at Least 12 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb exploded in central Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 42, police and hospital officials said.

The bomb went off at 2 p.m. in the Sinak commercial district on the east side of the Tigris River.

Also in central Baghdad, a battle raged after insurgents hijacked two buses and kidnapped at least 15 passengers, police said.

At least three policemen had been killed and eight wounded, including four passersby, authorities said.

The small buses where traveling through the Fadhil neighborhood, a Sunni enclave in central Baghdad, when they were waylaid by unidentified gunmen in three cars at 10:15 a.m.

The insurgents then abducted at least 15 passengers and took them to a nearby abandoned government building, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

The buses were heading from Baghdad's central Bab al-Mudham bus station to the city's eastern Shiite neighborhoods.

The fighting began when Iraqi security forces reached the scene about 30 minutes later, police said.

Nine militants were arrested as they attacked security forces from nearby alleys with light weapons.

According to Iraqi police, at least two U.S. helicopters were hovering overhead and U.S. forces had taken up positions near the fighting, but were not directly involved.

Sunni insurgents have repeatedly clashed with U.S. and Iraqi forces in the Fadhil area, which is also known for its high crime rate.

Terror trial opens for 8 alleged Greek anarchists

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Eight Greeks accused of belonging to a domestic radical anarchist group have gone on trial on terrorism charges in a maximum security Athens prison.

They have been charged with membership in the Revolutionary Struggle group, best known for firing a rocket-propelled grenade into the U.S. Embassy in Athens in 2007. That attack caused minor damage and no injuries.

Three of the suspects who have admitted to group membership defended Revolutionary Struggle's actions Monday, and said their trial was politically motivated. The other five denied all charges.

The trial will resume Nov. 1.

Nobody died in Revolutionary Struggle's attacks. The group appeared in 2003 and has claimed responsibility for bombing the Athens Stock Exchange and a gun attack that severely wounded a riot policeman in 2009.

Activist: Bahraini woman dies during protest

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — A Bahraini rights activist says a woman has died during clashes between riot police and anti-government protesters in the Gulf kingdom.

Nabeel Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, said Saturday that 47-year-old Zainab Hasan Ahmed al-Jumaa suffocated after inhaling tear gas fired by riot police during a demonstration Friday near her home in Sitra, the hub of Bahrain's oil industry.

Her death brings to 33 the number of those who have died since February when Bahrain's Shiite majority started protests for greater freedoms in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

Bahrain's Interior Ministry denied al-Jumaa's death was linked to a police operation and said in a statement posted on the ministry's website late Friday that the woman died of natural causes.

Fed minutes: Members divided over more bond buys

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve isn't about to launch another bond-buying program to boost the economy — at least not anytime soon.

While some Fed officials are open to such a move, according to minutes of the Fed's Jan. 24-25 policy-setting meeting, others believe the economy — which has come to life lately — would need to weaken before taking such action.

The debate took place at a meeting in which the Fed decided to hold its benchmark interest rate at record lows until at least late 2014. One Fed official argued that the central bank might need to consider abandoning that plan to keep inflation low.

"The minutes did not show an urgency to pursue further measures, with the general tone seeming to be one of 'wait-and-see'," said Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR, Inc. "So, if the economy loses steam, markets will begin to expect further action."

That seems even less likely now after recent data show the economy has picked up since that meeting.

Employers added 243,000 net jobs in January, the most since spring. That helped lower the unemployment rate for the fifth straight month, to 8.3 percent. Car sales are up, as is consumer borrowing. And U.S. factories reported having their best month of growth in five years.

"Given that the incoming economic data since that meeting has only been more positive ... there is now little chance of the Fed launching another round of large-scale asset purchases at the meetings in either March or April," said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

The minutes, which were released Wednesday, show Fed officials expected only modest economic growth in the coming months with only gradual declines in the unemployment rate.

Members cited several factors that could weaken the recovery and warrant more action from the Fed. Among them: a slowdown in economic activity abroad; U.S. budget cuts; further weakness in the already-depressed housing market; less borrowing by consumers; and increased volatility in financial markets because of Europe's debt crisis.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told a Senate panel last week that the declining unemployment rate doesn't capture the plight of millions who have stopped looking for work.

His cautious view suggests the Federal Reserve plans to stick with the three-year time line, even if the unemployment rate continues to gradually decline.

At the January meeting, the central bank for the first time released forecasts for where individual Fed officials expected the key interest rate to be in the future. Those forecasts showed that some members foresee super low rates beyond 2014, while six members saw the increases starting in either 2013 or 2014.

The rate forecasts were an effort to provide more explicit clues about the Fed's plans to give financial markets greater assurances that rates will stay low for some time to come.

The forecasts support a broader Fed effort to make its communications with the public more open.

3 more die in Egyptian desert flooding

Three more Egyptians died in flooding in the southern Sinai Desert Wednesday, bringing the toll for three days of unseasonably heavy rains to 10, said a health official.

The arid region is unused to heavy rains which cause flash floods that can destroy homes and carry off livestock.

Bedouins angry that the government was downplaying the magnitude of their losses clashed with security forces in South Sinai and injured a senior police officer and two of his men, said Mohammed Fayez, the head of the emergency medical unit in the province.

The Bedouins, who have long had uneasy relations with authorities, burnt car tires, blocked a main road and set fire to a truck, maintaining that the government was underreporting their losses and not sending sufficient aid.

Heavy wind and rains swept through parts of Egypt, Israel and Jordan on Monday, sweeping away homes, knocking out power lines and cutting roads.

One motorist died in Israel and 10 died in Egypt, including a British tourist whose boat capsized as he was sailing along the Nile in southern Egypt.

Egypt's state news agency said President Hosni Mubarak, who has been touring the stricken areas in Aswan, ordered $4,500 in compensation for each family that lost its home, and lesser amounts for those just damaged.

Some 441 mud brick homes were damaged in Aswan and another 250 in Sinai forcing some 1,500 to spend the night in schools and youth centers, the agency reported.

Candidates hold final rallies ahead of Thai polls

BANGKOK (AP) — Candidates in Thailand are holding their final rallies ahead of a general election, the latest battle in a bitter five-year struggle over the shape of the country's democracy.

The top contenders are Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and opposition leader Yingluck Shinawatra, the younger sister of deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin has fled overseas to escape a jail sentence for corruption and is not a candidate. But many voters will be judging him and his populist policies when they cast their ballots Sunday.

Thailand has been deeply divided since Thaksin was ousted by the military in 2006. The elections will be the first since more than 90 people died during anti-government protests by his supporters last year.

Britain's Cavendish wins Tour de France stage

Mark Cavendish of Britain won a Tour de France stage for the second time, cutting through the field Saturday in a sprint finish in the rain.

Team Columbia teammate Gerald Ciolek was second while team leader Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg kept the yellow jersey after the eighth stage in a race that was shaken a day earlier by the positive doping test of Spain's Manuel Beltran.

Cavendish and Ciolek finished ahead of Jimmy Casper of France in the 107-mile ride from Figeac to Toulouse.

"To finish with a 1-2 and have Kim in yellow, you can't do better than that," Cavendish said. "When I'm there in the sprint and fired up, normally I can win."

This was the last chance for the sprinters for a while, with riders entering the high mountains of the Pyrenees on Sunday.

Four cyclists _ Laurent Lefevre, Jerome Pineau and Christophe Riblon of France and Amets Txurruka of Spain _ broke away in the first hour of the race and at one point led by five minutes. But they were chased down by the teams of the sprinters and the last two were caught with just under two miles to go.

Nasty ads? Wake up and smell the tobacco

What fun I've had these past several days watching so manyspecial-interest groups and media commentators work themselves into atsk-tsking frenzy over the advertising campaigns of Camel cigarettesand Old Milwaukee beer. R.J. Reynolds is under fire because a studyfound the "Old Joe" cartoon camel character to be easily recognizableand quite popular among youngsters, while the Stroh Brewery Co. istaking heat for its Old Milwaukee commercials starring an equallycartoonish creation - the jiggly giggly Swedish bikini team.

Voices of outrage are ringing loud and long. A cigarettecompany allegedly trying to appeal to young nonsmokers by using acartoon character, of all things! And a brewery gratuitouslydisplaying nubile female forms in an effort to sell beer! Shocking!Where do they come up with such sneaky tactics?

Oh please. We're talking about beer and cigarettes here, nothealth foods or children's books. Of course the advertisements aregoing to be sleazy, insidious, nefarious and offensive. Haven't theyalways been? Isn't that sort of the point?

Looking for honesty or a straightforward approach in a beercommercial is like trying to find an original melody in a Vanilla Icesong. At least the Swedish bikini team ads acknowledge thelong-standing practice of using sex to hawk beer. To be offended bythese ads but not by the equally sexist but more polished"chick-videos" for Bud Light, Coors, Michelob, et al., seems rathersilly. The barely subliminal message of just about every beercommercial I've ever seen is, "Buy our beer and you'll meet fabulousbabes." Let's face it, you're never going to see an ad proclaiming,"Old Milwaukee - not as good as Michelob, but cheaper."

As for Old Joe, I'm having trouble believing the study in theJournal of the American Medical Association that says thephallic-faced "Smooth Character" is as recognizable to 6-year-olds asMickey Mouse, but then again, this is only the latest bizarre chapterin the four-year history of the inexplicably popular cartooncharacter.

Old Joe, a.k.a. Joe Camel, was launched in 1988 and modeledafter James Bond and the Don Johnson character in "Miami Vice." Atthe time, I thought this was the stupidest and strangest logo-mongerI'd ever seen. A tuxedo-clad cartoon camel interacting with humans? What does this have to do with the act of smoking, other than thefact that both camels and heavy smokers tend to have yellowish teethand bad breath?

And not only was this camel weird, he was evil. Consider one ofthe first Old Joe campaigns, titled "Party with the Wild Pack." Amagazine insert described the Joe Camel method for impressing womenon the beach: "Run into the water, grab someone and drag her back tothe shore as if you've saved her from drowning. The more she kicksand screams, the better."

Lovely. Someone actually concocted a rape fantasy as a way ofselling a cancer-causing product. And how do you sleep at night?

As distasteful as he was, Old Joe soon became an omnipresentcharacter on billboards, in magazines, on hats and shirts and beachtowels. Spuds MacKenzie with a hump, if you will. And Camel saw itsshare of the under-18 market soar from 0.5 percent to 32.8 percent, translating to more than $475 million in sales. Old Joe is a salesstud.

With a straight face, R.J. Reynolds continues to claim the OldJoe campaign isn't targeting young nonsmokers. If you believe that, you probably think the Lucky Charms leprechaun is intended to appealto 40-year-old fans of breakfast cereals. But what would we expectto hear? These people are pushing tobacco, for goodness sake. Morethan 1 million smokers stop every year, either because they quit ordie. If you don't recruit the young and the smokeless, you're goingto see your entire consumer base die - in many cases sooner ratherthan later, because after all, they are smokers, and there's thatbothersome cancer connection.

In the context of the R.J. Reynolds mission in life, which is tosell cigarettes, whoever created Old Joe should be given a medal. And to anyone in the anti-smoking, anti-sexist, anti-vice coalitionwho is truly shocked or outraged by the likes of Old Joe or theSwedish bikini team, I can only ask, where have you been?

Turkey rejects Kurdish demand on imprisoned leader

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's government on Wednesday rejected a demand by a pro-Kurdish party to move the imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan from a prison island and into a house arrest, indicating the government is not ready for any major concessions even as it seeks to reconcile with minority Kurds.

"Our answer is very clear. Such a thing is out of question," Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin told reporters. "It is not possible under existing laws."

The demand by pro-Kurdish People's Democracy Party, the leading Kurdish political movement in the country, was also echoed by Ocalan's Kurdish rebels.

Meanwhile, a court in the southeastern city of Siirt ordered 13 Kurds jailed Wednesday, pending trial on charges of membership in the youth wing of Ocalan's Kurdish rebel group, the Anatolia news agency said

Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 to seek an independent Kurdish state. It has since changed demands and says it is fighting for an autonomy within Turkey.

Ocalan is serving a life sentence on the prison island of Imrali. He was captured in Kenya in 1999, before a Turkish court sentenced him to death, which was later commuted to life in prison.

While Turks consider Ocalan responsible for nearly 40,000 deaths since the conflict began, he is still revered by his Kurdish supporters who often brace clashes with police for carrying his posters or shouting his name, which is illegal in Turkey.

The government has taken several steps to improve the rights of Kurds, including allowing a Kurdish-language television broadcast but Kurdish politicians insist on broader rights such as education in Kurdish. Turkey opposes this out of fear that it could divide the country along ethnic lines. Kurds comprise up to 20 percent of the country's 74 million people.

On Monday, PKK called off a unilateral six-month-long cease-fire, accusing the government of not responding to their demands — including improvement of Ocalan's prison conditions and an end to military operations. It also called for an end to prosecution of dozens of elected Kurdish mayors on charges of separatism.

"The present situation is a no-solution situation," the rebel group said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Wednesday. It said that only the government was benefiting from the lull in the fighting in the run up to general elections in June.

Japan's central bank leaves key lending rate unchanged

AP Online
03-26-1998
TOKYO (AP) _ In a widely expected move, the Bank of Japan announced Thursday that it has left a key lending rate unchanged at its all-time low of 0.5 percent.

The decision was made unanimously by a four-member policy-making board, including new Bank of Japan Governor Masaru Hayami.

The 72-year-old Hayami officially assumed the central bank's top post last Friday after his predecessor, Yasuo Matsushita, resigned to take responsibility for a bribery scandal at the institution.

Speaking before Parliament on Monday, Hayami ruled out an early increase in interest rates by saying low rates would help the slumping Japanese economy recover.

Japan's official discount rate, the key lending rate charged by the Bank of Japan for loans to commercial banks, has remained at a record low of 0.5 percent since September 1995.

19 PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS DIE IN FIRE IN SOUTH ITALY.(MAIN)

Byline: Associated Press

ROME -- A fire early Sunday killed 19 residents of a psychiatric care facility that was housed in a prefabricated building in a southern region in which many Italians still live in trailers 21 years after a devastating earthquake.

The home's nine other residents, ranging in age from 31 to 63, were injured while escaping the flames with two night nurses.

Authorities said it appeared the fire was accidental. Firefighters speculated several portable heaters, turned on to fight the cold night air in the fiberglass-walled building, might have overloaded the electrical system and sparked the blaze shortly after midnight.

Scientists identify protein essential for cholesterol absorption from intestine.

2004 MAR 15 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- In a major advance in understanding the intestinal pathway for cholesterol absorption and the mechanism of action for Zetia (ezetimibe), scientists at Schering-Plough Research Institute (SPRI) have identified and characterized a long sought protein critical to intestinal cholesterol absorption.

In an article published in the journal Science, Schering-Plough scientists report on the identification of the protein, named NPC1L1, as playing an essential role in the ezetimibe-sensitive cholesterol absorption pathway.

Cholesterol levels in the blood are largely controlled through two sources in the body: the liver, which synthesizes (produces) cholesterol, and the intestine, where cholesterol is absorbed into the blood stream.

"By demonstrating the function of the NPC1L1 protein, scientists at SPRI have made a …

Iran Shows Video of Captured Britons

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian state television showed video footage Wednesday of a the servicewoman and a group of seized British sailors and marines. The video showed the sailors and marines eating. The woman, 26-year-old Faye Turney, was shown wearing a white tunic with a black headscarf draped loosely over her hair.

"Obviously we trespassed," Turney said on the footage broadcast by Al-Alam, an Arabic-language, Iranian state-run television station that is carried across the Middle East by satellite. She was also shown in uniform eating with sailors and marines and at one point was shown smoking a cigarette with eyes downcast.

"My name is leading sailman Faye Turney. I come …

A day to honor

BURN 'EM . . .

It may not cause one to tear up and break out the flag, but today is when we (women) were constitutionally given the right to vote.

Yep. It's Women's Suffrage Day.

It took a lot of work, a bucketload of guts and a strong constitution to endure the brickbats tossed at the suffragists who made it all happen.

But I'd like to credit New York Times columnist Gail Collins with resurrecting this marvelous vignette about how "ninety years ago this month, all eyes turned to Tennessee, the only state yet to ratify the" amendment.

- The buckshot: It seems Tennessee's Harry Burn, who was the youngest member of the House and planning to …

Packing heat: Firehouse Subs reels in franchisees with low start-up costs, high volumes and classic hot sandwiches.(Growth Strategy)

Brothers Robin and Chris Sorensen are used to taking risks. As firefighters for the Jacksonville Fire Department in Florida, they had regularly put their lives on the line.

So many close to them weren't surprised when the former firefighters took another risk in 1994. Pooling about $30,000 from family and friends and using a credit card from Robin's mother-in-law, the brothers launched Firehouse Subs, a fast-casual concept that serves steamed submarine sandwiches.

The gamble appears to be paying off. Firehouse Subs is burning through the Southeast. With 148 units in nine states, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company is getting closer to its goal of becoming one of the top five sub chains by 2008, banking on its franchising system to grow the chain.

Hot from the Steamer

Firehouse Subs says it differentiates itself in the crowded sandwich segment by serving steamed subs with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Every day unit workers slice cheeses and fresh meats instead of using frozen cold cuts. The meats and cheeses are steamed and placed on a toasted roll.

Best sellers include the Hook & Ladder Sub, $4.59 for medium and $6.19 for a large half-pounder, smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, melted Monterey Jack cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and a kosher dill pickle; and the Firehouse Steak Sub, $4.79 for medium and $6.59 for a large half-pounder, slices of sauteed sirloin steak, onions and bell peppers, smothered with melted provolone. Food costs range from 33 percent to 35 percent.

The 1,500-square-foot units sport a fire-station theme that includes spotted tables similar to a Dalmatian's spots, red and white walls accented with black chair rails, exposed brick columns and red quarry floor tiles. Fire trucks and hats, fire-station signs, and black-and-white photos of fire-fighters round out the decor. …

Distract and compromise to calm screaming child

Q. My 18-month-old son, Matt, sometimes is frustrated andwillful. If he wants something he can't have, he will scream andscream. I am at my wit's end to get him to stop. The other day, hewas hungry and tired. He wanted a banana. Unfortunately, I had nonein the house. He just screamed so long, I wanted to hit him. Whatcan I do?

A. It takes a lot of self-control to resist striking yourhysterical child. It's not easy.

I have two suggestions. First, if Matt becomes overwroughtagain and won't stop screaming, you need to distract him. But onedistraction is not enough. You'll need to think of two in advance. For instance, you might startle him momentarily by pointing …

RUDD CLAIMS POLE.(SPORTS)

Byline: Combined wire services

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- So much for NASCAR's young guns.

Five days after 47-year-old Rusty Wallace won at Martinsville, 47-year-old Ricky Rudd drove to the pole position for Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway.

``For the old guys, it's been a pretty neat week,'' said Rudd, moments after holding off Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the top speed. ``I don't think age has anything to do with it.''

Rudd's Ford notched the first pole position for the Wood Brothers, one of stock car racing's pioneer teams, since 1984 (Buddy Baker) and earned his first-career pole at the superspeedway with a speed …

Fuel-oil blenders save time, money, and lives: environmental professionals at the Army Engineer School found a way reduce oil disposal problems in Iraq by using commercial off-the-shelf equipment.

Used oil is a major waste stream for a deployed army. The Army generates an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 gallons of used oil per week in Iraq. Although contracts that provide for its disposal are in place, insurgents make the already difficult job dangerous. Convoys are frequent targets of enemy attacks, so commanders have reduced or stopped completely the transport of waste such as used oil. The resulting stockpiling of used oil presents a significant problem.

In the Army, used oil is handled as many as eight times before its ultimate disposal, which generates an unacceptable drain of available time and money. How can the Army eliminate this costly waste stream? That …

Italy and France Qualify for Euro 2008

Christian Panucci scored on a header in second-half injury time to give Italy a 2-1 victory over Scotland on Saturday night, a result that qualified both the Azzurri and France for next year's European Championship.

Luca Toni scored in the second minute for Italy, which beat France in last year's World Cup final, but Scotland tied the score on Barry Ferguson's goal in the 65th.

Italy (8-1-2) leads Group B with 26 points with one game remaining and is one point ahead of France (8-2-1). The top two nations in each of the seven groups join co-hosts Austria and Switzerland at next June's tournament.

A tale of three cities: Latino candidates fall short in three hotly contested mayoral races. (How They Voted, 2001).

Political operatives in Los Angeles, New York City and Houston should not have been blamed if they thought 2001 would be the year of the Latino. In each city, a Latino candidate mounted a vigorous campaign for mayor; in each city strong multiracial coalitions supported their efforts; but in each city, the Latino candidate was defeated.

What went wrong?

"In a sense, those mayoral races came a little too early for the Latino community," says Dr. Louis DeSipio, professor of political science at the University of California-Irvine. "Two of the candidates, those in New York and L.A., were quite good, but didn't have skills yet--the grassroots, campaign, professional skills--to get out the vote at that level. And those races showed that."

In Los Angeles, last summer's mayoral race pitted Antonio …

When big news is met with shrugs.(Main)

Byline: REX SMITH

If you have ever been part of a story that you hoped the press would pay attention to, only to be frustrated by what you saw as a collective "ho-hum" from media decision-makers, let me say this: I know how you feel.

This may surprise folks who believe newspaper editors and TV news producers conspire to pump up some stories and shelve others - speaking of unindicted co-conspirators, we'll talk about Richard Nixon in a moment here - but sometimes it's hard even for people who work in the media to convince journalists that a story deserves telling.

My case in point is the article that was stripped across the front page of last Sunday's …
