WA: Fisherman critical as customs rushes him to Australia

A Portuguese fisherman is being rushed to Australia in a critical condition after being
rescued from sub-Antarctic waters.

Australian Customs says the 46-year-old is suffering from a burst duodenal ulcer with
numerous complications.

He was aboard a Spanish-flagged fishing ship, the Arnela, near the remote Heard and
McDonald islands when he fell ill.

Australian Customs and Fisheries were called to his aid last Thursday.

Officials say the vessel carrying him, the Oceanic Viking, is expected to arrive into
Fremantle on Christmas Eve.
